Vasant Panchami

Vasant Panchami is a religious Hindu spring festival. The meaning of Vasant is Spring and Panchami means five, which means the festival of Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Spring. It is celebrated with a lot of fervor in households in the northern and the eastern part of India that is Bihar, Nepal and West Bengal. In the cultural city of India, that is Kolkata, this festival is celebrated with a lot of zeal. This Spring festival is observed by Bengalese in each and every household in Bengal. Bengalese observes the important ritual of hatey khori, which marks the beginning of the learning chapter in a child’s life. On this day he is made to touch a pen and taught how to write. In the Southern part of India, this festival is not celebrated as a public or household affair but only in the temples as a religious festival. Vasant Panchami is the name given to a medley of festivals celebrated in India. It is celebrated as a Hindu festival where devotees pay homage to the Goddess of learning, Saraswati and is known by the name of “Shree Panchami” in Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. It is observed as a Sikh festival in gurudwaras and known as the “Basant festival of kites” in Punjab. It is popularly celebrated as the Sufi Basant festival by the Sufi Muslims. It is commemorated as the festival of harvest in Bihar.

According to the Indian literature this festival is related to Shringara Rasam. It commemorates Kamadeva, Rati, his wife and friend Vasant, who is an incarnation of Spring.During the ancient period when this festival was more geared towards Kamadeva, this festival was observed in the Royal Bakshi’s durbar or palace where dhol players and dancing girls celebrated this festival with a lot of vigor.
